Temples of Zoom!

* * * * * by • 10th March 2008

“I found out about both Yerba Mate and Teapigs in an article in Men's Health magazine.

With a two-month old son and a busy job, anything that claimed it could possibly boost my energy levels, was worth a try! So there I found it online (and incidentally, I think it's a great site) and ordered a couple of boxes.

It arrived within a couple of days, and they even chucked in a free sample bag of another tea which I thought was a nice touch. Teapigs very honestly described this as a tea which you'll either love or hate, but my advice is not to be too put off by this - I don't think it's any more of an acquired taste than regular green tea, which if you frequent a site like this, you've probably tried and aren't too put off by.

As for the energy-boosting benefits, well it could be coincidence and/or placebo effect, but I do feel a lot better in the last few days since I started drinking it, so my advice is to give it a try. If nothing else, energy benefits aside it's a really nice tea. Only time will tell if I lose a bit of weight too.

Top marks for the 'tea temples' as well - basically just a very fine teabag with real leaf tea inside - the end result of which is you don't need to dredge your teacup before washing it and don't end up with a layer of dust on top of your tea, just a great tasting brew!

Thanks teapigs - I'll be back soon for another, larger order

Pack it BIGGER

“I just want to add to the call for a bigger packet. surely you can see this tea is loved by your customers! So please make this scrummy (common cold fighting tea) in BIGGER numbers. Come on you know it makes sense........”

yerba mate

* * * * * by • 1st April 2008

“oh my lordy lord, i was just out in my garden and feeling really rather tired (being an avid weeder has this affect) when i thought i'd make a nice cup of tea. I was looking forward to trying yerba mate as there had been a number of conflictig and mixed reviews amongst many of my tea drinking friends . I was pleasently suprised and found the smoky flavour very exotic and rustic. I also got a big burst of energy and commenced to being Mrs Greenfinger with new zeal and mammoth relish. I shall be recommending yerba mate to everybody.”

* * * * * by • 13th April 2010

“I found this site as I was specifically searching google for Yerba Mate as I was interested in its energising properties. I brought this and it arrived today.. Am on my second cuppa and I love it. The taste is probably not to everyones liking but for me its decent.. It definitely feels stimulating and well I will be buying more! Also wanna try some different flavours of teas now too .. Never been a tea drinker in the past!! :)”

A very pleasant surprise

“The best review i can give this tea is to say that it arrived in a 'cheeky' pack a week ago and i was initially hesitant in trying it, yet i'm having to re order already !.

A really great discovery which has become my first drink of the day (and the second).”

Miracle Product!

“I can't rave about this tea enough! It has a really delicious fresh taste. It gave me energy but I also sleep better!
As if that isn't enough, I've even lost weight!
I agree with the previous reviewer, please do in the 50 boxes. I've just ordered loose tea and an infusion wheel to try and make it go further.”

Yerba Mate tea

* * * * * by SG • 16th June 2019

“Absolutely love my Yerba mate tea. I’ve been looking for this for a while after having Yerba mate in Spain and delighted to find this on tea pigs. Definitely will get again! Great tea, great price- my new tea to start the day! Would recommend to anyone who enjoys green/herbal teas”

yerba mate

* * * * * by • 5th April 2008

“After been a traditional tea drinker for 40 something years I thought I'd give something else in the tea world a try. After tasting a considerable amount that tasted like chewing gum, perfume, aftershave and other things I don't care to mention. I tried yerba mate expecting the same results a couple of sips and down the plug hole...... BUT.......was pleasantly surprised its like a glass of red wine the first couple of sips are a bit harsh then it kind of grows on you. So to people like myself who facy a change from the normal cuppa I can highly reccomend the odd cup of yerba mate thrown in its a nice change.”

Best mates!!!

* * * * * by • 6th May 2010

“Although I've only tried two varieties so far - i.e. Yerba Mate and Summer Flowers (which is also lovely). I love this tea! The two in contrast could be compared to Dark angel and Good Angel. And although it's sometimes nice to be good, if u can't be good - then be good at it!! ;0) Thankfully I never was a loyal cigarette smoker to compare this mysterious, distinctive tea to tobacco - however, I would say that this tea is Smokin!!! ;0) I definitely feel it draws me out of a mundane, 'get me outta of here' slump anytime of the day and my brain does feel stimulated and alive - well at least until my next menial task that is!! I actually prefer it to green tea. Keep up the good work're my angel!! ;0)”

Stevia and cocoa

* * * * * by Tom Goodgame • 8th September 2012

“so i tried this for the 1st time this week, and the second bag i had a teaspoon of stevia and about a 1/2 teaspoon on cocoa with it, and its amazing. it sounds like an odd combo, but the cocoa accents the smokeyness and the stevia provides a natural sweet aftertaste. try it”

“I've had yerba mate before but I never thought it would become one of my favourites. Now I can't think of a better drink for a cold winter afternoon or evening! longing for my mate'

* * * * * by • 23rd July 2008

“It was when I started tango lessons last year, I was introduced to the Yerbe Mate Tea.
At the Milongas, it was fashinating to see the Argentine teachers gather to suck this drink through a metal straw, out of a specially designed bowl... it seemed almost ritualistic, and deffinately good fun.

When I was invited to try it, I soon fell for the refreshing and energising effect, and set out to get some for myself..

For me - it was the first thing I had ever tried, which could replace coffee, which gives me the gitters if I have too much it..

Since then - I have tried a few different versions of the tea, but have to say, the Teapigs Mate' suits me to perfection!

I brew it just like green tea (don't tell the argis) as I dont have the proper 'mate' kit' ...

Anyway ~ hurry up the post.....:~)”

Yerbama (te)

* * * * * by • 14th June 2010

“I have drunk Yerbama as I know it, all my life. My grandmother was a fan. She used it for her rheumatism (which she hardly had at all). My family always drank it with milk. I also like lapsang souchong, so that taste is obviously similar and would appeal to like-tasting individuals. Glad to find it available as a tea bag. We've always used the small leaf from Brazil.”

* * * * * by Chloë • 30th January 2012

“As I'd had to give up coffee due the awful fractious slumps I experienced afterwards, when my cousin suggested this over Christmas, I thought I'd give it a go and like everyone else, have never looked back. It really truly does give you a brilliant lift that is a gift of clarity and concentration rather than the nervous twitch buzz of coffee. I think the boyfriend summed it up best when he said 'It makes my head feel fresh!'”

Rocket Fuel

* * * * * by Tom • 2nd March 2013

“I like to boil it for at least 5 minutes to really get the flavours going - and mixed with a strong green tea it really packs a punch. Focuses the mind on a long afternoon!”

* * * * * by • 14th March 2007

“mate is an awesome tea.

the taste is best left alone (though in parts of south america sugar is added) and should be brewed using water that is not boiling to avoid an over heavy tannis (bitterness).

works superbly as a pick me up after a big meal or midday nap...”

I love it

* * * * * by • 3rd March 2009

“I am now a full time yerba mate drinker! In fact i have given up my 1000 cups of tea a day and now drink this and love it. It feels cleansing and energizing - i love it”

A Suprising Favourite

* * * * * by Kerry Cowie • 18th February 2012

“As an avid green tea drinker, I was put off to start with as the reviews said it was the green version of lapsang souchong, which I don't like. Yes it has a slight smokiness about it but very clean and fresh tasting too, with the added bonus of a huge antioxidant score! What's not to like. It's up there in my top 3!”

* * * * * by Bryony • 24th April 2013

“I replaced green tea with coffee and tea years ago but it was only a few months ago I tried Yerba Mate. I love it! I actually much prefer it to the green tea variety, its lovely and smokey but doesn't have the same bitterness green tea does. I would love 50 boxes as I can't get enough of this tea, its such a delight to drink and still has the same health properties as the green tea I'm so used to!”

* * * * * by • 10th March 2009

“O.k, I am happy to say, I am in the 'love it' camp! It does have quite a strong flavour, but it's not at all unpleasant - I quite like it! It's quite a smokey flavour, as long as you don't brew it for too long, as because it could become overpowering. I'm not sure about the energy benefits yet, but it definitely helps me to feel full, so I'm guessing it would help to aid weight loss - will have to keep you posted on that one!”

* * * * * by • 18th September 2010

“This tea smells horrible, but once you get over the original smell the tea is rather pleasant and makes you feel very alert.

I return to school after the summer holidays tomorrow so I will be drinking lots tomorrow morning to get me going! This tea is great for anyone who hates coffee as it has the same effect on your body without the need (my need, i cant stand coffee) for lots of sugar and milk.

Just make sure you dont get a wiff of it before hand because it may put you off!”

Surprisingly refreshing!

* * * * * by Joanne Gibbins • 24th February 2012

“I was unsure about this tea but I love it! It is a little heavier than green tea, but doesnt have the green tea aroma. Its is wonderful and I will definitely be buying more! Thank you Teapigs :-)”

Yerba mate

* * * * * by • 13th March 2009

* * * * * by • 10th August 2007

“I can't believe what I read about this tea on your website as the taste is really, really lovely without all the cinnamon and other potions you suggested adding. It's a really smooth tasting tea and if it's made with water that's off-the-boil, then it doesn't become bitter. I will most definitely be buying more teas from you. Tessa Sinclair”

“After reading about this in grazia I decided to go online and buy. I have never heard of tea pigs before, its finally arrived after ordering over a week ago and it tasts just like green tea which I drink by the bucket load. Ok so it has a slight smoky after taste but I can live with that!”

“We run a detox and rejuvenation retreat in Spain, I was given some yerba mate tea pigs as a christmas present, I put them with all the other herbal teas we have here and my guests looooved them. They disappeared within a day, infact there was nearly a fight for the last one in the pack. I am ordering some more - is it possible to buy them by the suitcase full :)”

Yerba mate, Give it a chance the taste grows on you

* * * * * by Butch • 5th March 2015

“The first time I tried this I wasn't sure what to make of it. The initial earthy, woody taste to the smokey aftertaste. But I found myself liking it more and more with each mouthful and by the time I'd finished the cup I liked it so much I immediately made another cup and now I drink it all the time.

Tip: If you prefer it sweetened instead of using sugar or sweetener try a teaspoon of honey.”

Mover over Jasmine!

* * * * * by • 4th September 2007

“Being a big fan of the usual Jasmine, Green, and other herbal Teas. It only took me a split second to give this a trty once i read the health benefits! It tastes like a stronger brew of green tea, with a def smokey taste! I have switched it to my regular cup of tea! I have been feeling more alert - but not sure if that is just a phsycological thing!?”

Yerba Mate Tea

* * * * * by • 16th January 2010

“I'm new to Teapigs and I had read the information on all the teas and decided to order a few samples tins. Out of the teas I ordered, this tea was the one I was most apprehensive about trying but was curious to try because of the "love it or hate it" remark. When I opened the tin and sniffed the tea, it didn't appeal to me but I went ahead and tried it. To my surprise it was pleasant, slightly bitter but not a nasty taste. I added a piece of fresh ginger to the cup which improved the smell and also made a slight difference to the taste. Once I had drunk it, a few minutes later I found myself wanting another cup. I'm not sure if I felt any more alert and awake but I shall certainly be buying more of this tea and making sure I have my fresh ginger to go with it. I am pleased I took the plunge and gave it a try.”

Yerba Mate tea - invigorating

* * * * * by • 18th April 2011

“I was, initially, a little concerned about trying a creasote-y tea. However I was pleasantly surprised. The smell is dark and smokey and almost bitter, but I thought it was OK. The smokeyness was the strongest aroma and it was soft and warm.

Upon tasting the tea I wondered where the smokey aroma came from because the taste is smooth and rounded - not harsh and aggresive (which is what creasote brought to mind!). This tea leaves your mouth feeling clean with a slight herbal taste - I can't think how to describe it, but it is very pleasant without being over-powering.

Visually the tea is a fresh bright green - a spring green if you will, and that is how it leaves you feeling....with a spring in your step.

An interesting tea - I'm glad I took a chance on it, because I really enjoy it.”

Cheers mate!

* * * * * by Darren Holloway • 13th May 2012

“What a lovely surprise. This tea tastes subtler than I thought it would having read the description, very pleasant. And as for the focus/energising effects? Well, they weren't lying. One cup of this and my head was clear and my mojo restored. Clean, slow release energy without any of the anxious buzz you get from some caffeine drinks. Thank you teapigs xx”

“I tried this after reading the comments; it's like green tea but without the bitterness. I have one every morning and I love how it makes me feel naturally lifted!”

Yerba mate tea

* * * * * by • 27th November 2007

“Three weeks ago I was actually tasting mate tea at Santo Pipo mate plantation at Bella Vista in Paraguay (sorry - name dropping, but true). Sadly, somewhere on the journey home I managed to lose my huge box of mate tea. So, I wasn't sure about these tea bags but they are the real thing alright. Its certainly not as energising as the coca tea I had in Peru, but unfortunately that's not available in the UK. However, I think it does give me a bit of go in the mornings and it tastes fine too.
I like it best weak with no additives and made with hot, not boiling, water. I'm very pleased to find a supplier.”

“This was added a previous order as a free sample to try - I took ages to pluck up the courage, but am in the middle of final assignment writing for university and needed something and whilst searching through my cupboard re-found these - I was a bit nervous of the smokey, you'll love or hate, thing, but actually they are delicious and really have worked! Will definitely be adding to my regular order!! Could you start selling them in boxes of 50 though?”

* * * * * by Su Turney • 11th June 2012

“I was expecting this to be pretty grim after reading its description on your website, but I was pleasantly surprised. When I'm feeling so tired that my face actually hurts, Yerba Mate really does take the pain away and makes me feel awake. Drinking this transforms me from lethargic and listless to the female equivalent of Jack Bauer - strong, powerful and invincible!”

“Yerba Mate didnt taste as bad as I thought it would. It is the ashtray smell as you are drinking it that is the worse bit. Have been drinking it a for 2 or 3 weeks now and adding a slice of lemon to the pot whilst it is stewing makes all the difference giving it a bit of a zesty taste but most of all taking the pubs ashtray smell away.
As for the energy boosting qualities - I am undecided.”

delivery was super quick - it arrived the day after i ordered, much to my surprise. online shopping never turns out as easy as you expect it to be, but it was even more so with teapigs.

Miracle - have replaced coffee with Yerba Mate, and don't regret it at all.”

“Of all the teas of tried this is the one i'm least decided about. It's not un-pleasant, i did'nt find it that stimulating and i'd probably drink it agin if there was'nt much else in the cupboard.”

Overall okay.

“I got this tea on the suggestion that it could be the next Lapsang Souchong. Yerba Mate doesn't come close to Lapsang Souchong's smoky yumminess and I'm a little confused by other reviews lusting over its great smoky flavour. Maybe I've been spoilt by Lapsang Souchong. Yerba Mate is an okay tea - more in the area of a green tea. I enjoyed a cup in the morning with my breakfast.

Worth trying but I doubt it will become a regular thing for me.

TL;DR version:
Please add a Lapsang Souchong tea to your collection :D”

“I bought myself a 2 teabag pack of Yerba Mate as I like to try new things and my tea cupboard was getting full of the usual green/black varieties.
Having only just finished a cup of Yerba Mate, brewed for 3 mins and made with a sprinkle of cinnamon, I really cannot decide whether I like it or not. Love the smokiness and the cinnamon gives it a wee kick, however much like Lapsang Suchong its probably not something I'd enjoy drinking every day”

“I'm facing a dilemma with yerba mate: every other sip I take from my cup tastes nice, but every second tastes as if someone had poured hot water over fresh tobacco in my tea cup and diluted it with a bit of green tea.
(not quite as bad as you'd think though)

I have tried mixing it with several things from honey and vanilla to jasmine and lemons. The taste does improve a little with especially honey.

Now, my dilemma is whether I should suffer the taste to gain the health and energy benefits, or if I should just stop. And since every other sip actually DOES taste nice....”

Yerba Mate- Watch out for the natural caffine!

“I am a huge fan of Teapigs and always have a variety in my cupboard. I started to drink it when I stopped drinking coffee. I used to have a cup of Yerba Mate in the morning , and sometimes one mid day. I've just been to the doctor and my blood presssure has gone through the roof. I always had high blood pressure , but it has significantly increased since my new regime . This is by no means a complaint , I've swapped over to lemon and ginger first thing now, so just be aware that it does contain natural caffine !”

“This tastes ok but I did not feel energised by it, in fact I felt the opposite - incredibly sleepy. That would be great, but that's not what I wanted it for.”

Very disappointed

“I bought this tea as the description said it had a light Smokey flavour and I was looking for something that was not as strong as a lapsang but still had a mild Smoky Piquant to it. Unfortunatly the pack I had was quite flavourless. It just tasted like a fairly bland green tea.”

“Tastes like garden sweepings with a hint of Jeyes fluid! Best avoided in my opinion.”

Holy Smoke!

“I was really keen to try this tea but have to say i am in the hate camp! I'm not sure if it is because i am an ex-smoker but when drinking this tea all i can think about is drinking a cup full of tobacco. On the other hand the Super Fruit tea is delicious!”
